Young, Gifted & Black,(black version.)

acrylic on 75.2cm. circular stretched canvas,

(Acknowledgments:

Of Mourning," by Claudia Rankine - P.148 in "The Fire This Time," edited by Jesmyn Ward.

In the United States, with the police shootings of Michael Brown,Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice & many others, we can clearly see systemic racism at work. In the words of the Nobel Prize Winner for Literature, Toni Morrison:
"I want to see a cop shoot a white unarmed teenager in the back,..."
And as Martin Luther King Jr. said in his " I Have A Dream "speech: " We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality."

You may notice that I have painted two versions of this painting, a black version & a white version.
In the black version, the white circumference is unpainted-
in the white version everything is white, except some of the text.

Young, Gifted & Black, (white version.)

acrylic on 75.2cm. circular stretched canvas, 2018

Acknowledgments:

Of Mourning," by Claudia Rankine - P.148 in "The Fire This Time," edited by Jesmyn Ward.

1) One of the reasons why I painted two versions of this painting is because the black community's experience of racism
can often be radically different from the white community's experience.
Note: the black version of this painting's text ends with an exclamation mark - the white version's text ends with three dots, more like another day at the office...
2) Another example - I signed the white version in white deliberately - as your signature dries, it looks like it's disappearing - that may remind you of a black slave who has run away, or, what if white people, faced-down by law enforcement, also routinely had to run for their lives.....
3) The six words in each of these paintings might prove useful within an operational manual for all law enforcement people ...
4) There may be people who believe that a painting or paintings can never change the world, & I'm not one of them..
